"Superb debut by Drowzee, diffracting myriad styles of drill, baile funk, dancehall, grime and reggaeton in a crystalline definition of his sound for promising yung label, Profound Mystery.

‘Patience’ is Drowzee’s debut album of sorts, pulling together tracks started over the past 5 years and eventually finished under pressure and free time of lockdown. The eleven tracks are generous with playful melody and animated with attention to detail, balancing aspects of hyperlocal styles in a singularly plural vernacular that's symptomatic of Manchester’s fertile scene of the past past half decade.

Drowzee’s full spectrum is on display, sometimes in the space of one track, and across the set, from deft dancehall melancholy of ‘Versace’ and electroid dembow tang of ‘Pictures’ with its fragrant vocal motifs, to the Afrobeats/drill flow of the title tune, and even making room for airborne, rhythmelodic phrasing in the parting ace ‘Melodies’. There’s a pearl at the album’s core in the all-too-brief appearance of an autotuned Sleepy duelling with his vocodered echoes in ‘Church’, and a lick of uptempo Brime-meets-UKF in ‘Fellowship’ exemplifying a light but urgent touch, also found in the whirring grime mechanics of ‘Starfish’, and a nod to old skool UKG on ‘Ridge Racer’."

"PATIENCE is a collection of demos, tracks, instrumentals and ideas dating back over the last five or six years, which I spent lockdown turning into a full album. It brings together snapshots of all my different influences, reflecting my tendency to flit between different styles and genres.

I've always had serious difficulties finishing music, and this album was an exercise in self-development, learning to be patient with myself, working thru writer's block, working thru the anxieties associated with wrapping up a project. Keeping going even when I felt frustrated or wanted to give up. This process is an extension of the work I've been doing on my mental health, that same idea of taking things on step at a time."
